14/3/25 Fire at South Melbourne Central (Spotlight & Woolworths)

At 3PM today I went to my car, which is currently parked below South Melbourne Central to find fire engines and smoke coming out of the car park and/or Woolworths loading dock area on the Market Street side. The smoke is kind of brown and smells of rubber, it seems likely that a car is on fire down there. Crowds of onlookers have stopped to have a look and ponder as to what has happened. The firemen won’t let anyone too close.

This is super inconvenient for me as I have a bunch of expensive eBay parcels in my car that need sending today, which I was planning to post at the Market Street Post Office across the road. I will update this article later when I know more, the guys from the Happy Hippo Carwash (the best car wash in South Melbourne) will surely fill me in on it next time I talk to them.

I did try to ask the Happy Hippo Car Wash owner, who was standing in amongst the firemen but the firemen told me to go away, which I guess makes sense. There is a fire after all. If only they knew of the cutting-edge journalism I am attempting to create here.

Around 4:40pm I went back to check and the fire engines were leaving and I was able to get my car out and get my mail posted at the South Melbourne Post Office. Luckily, the boom gate (which reads your number plate to track how long you are there) still let me out for free, as I couldn’t exit within 2 hours as planned. I got my mail posted and will hopefully get 5-Star feedback from my buyers who I’ve given updates on the situation to.

After my trip to the Post Office, I went back down for a stickybeak and saw a clean-up crew cleaning up the mess from the culprit, an Audi that had been on fire. A lot of the crowd had speculated that it might be an electric vehicle, but it was not.
