Melbourne’s ambitious urban renewal plans have taken a major leap forward, with the Victorian Government unveiling the planned route for a new underground rail line through Fishermans Bend and Docklands.
The new tunnel will connect three key areas, with stations planned at the Innovation and Sandridge precincts in Fishermans Bend, plus a central stop under Bourke Street in Docklands, right near Southern Cross Station. This means residents will finally have a direct rail link between Melbourne’s western suburbs, the CBD, and the rapidly growing Fishermans Bend area.
The government is already taking steps to improve public transport in the precinct. Since 2022, about 1,500 additional weekly bus services have been introduced to help locals get around more easily. Plans are also underway to expand tram services, creating a more integrated transport network for the community.
This rail project is crucial for Fishermans Bend, which is shaping up to be Australia’s largest urban renewal development. By 2050, the former industrial zone is expected to house 80,000 people and support just as many jobs. Having a confirmed rail route gives property owners, businesses, and developers the confidence to plan ahead and ensures future development stays aligned with the area’s long-term vision.
