A Major Sale for Victoria’s Pub Scene
Bells Hotel has been sold to The Saxon Group in a deal worth around $20 million, making it the largest pub transaction in Victoria this year. The sale has been described as a sign of renewed confidence in Melbourne’s pub and gaming sector after what has been considered a quieter period for major deals.
The Saxon Group Steps In
The Saxon Group, led by former Carlton & United Breweries boss Peter Filipovic, along with David and Merv Shannon, has added Bells Hotel to a portfolio that already includes the Royal Saxon in Richmond and Fitzroy’s Naked for Satan. Filipovic said Bells is “an already iconic pub” that still “needs a bit more love and attention”. He explained that the group plans to refresh the venue over the coming years while keeping it a vital community destination.
Farewell to a Longtime Owner
The sale ends more than a decade of ownership under Sam Tresise, who purchased Bells in 2013. Over his tenure, he carried out a significant redevelopment that transformed the hotel into a twelve-zone hospitality precinct. The changes included a rooftop bar with views across the city, the large Main Hall for events, and multiple dining and gaming spaces.
The Venue’s Unique Features
Located on the corner of Moray and Coventry Streets, Bells Hotel sits on a 1,161 square metre site with more than 60 metres of dual street frontage. The venue includes 40 electronic gaming machines, versatile food and function spaces, and a rooftop that has become one of the most popular in South Melbourne.
What It Means for South Melbourne
Bells Hotel has always been more than just a pub. It has hosted community celebrations, weekend catch-ups and countless local events. With new ownership committed to investment, locals can expect Bells to evolve while holding on to its reputation as a cornerstone of South Melbourne life.
