After 7 years, Degani South Melbourne has closed its doors. It was located on the Market Street side of South Melbourne Central (Shop G16 – G17, 111 Cecil Street, South Melbourne VIC 3205). Whilst some Degani cafes are very popular, I feel that the South Melbourne one never seemed very busy and I never got around to eating there. I feel the location was quite small compared to other Degani locations and with so many options on nearby Clarendon street, it is hard to stand out.
About Degani Cafes
Degani is a Melbourne-born café brand that began in 1999 when founder George Pezaros opened a small bakery-café in Clifton Hill, quickly winning locals over with pastries, generous breakfasts and a signature smooth coffee blend. From that single shop, Degani has grown into one of Australia’s larger boutique café franchises, operating roughly 60–70 outlets across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, with each site individually fitted out to suit its neighbourhood rather than following a strict “cookie-cutter” look. In the mid-2020s, the chain attracted private-equity backing (Fusion Foods) to accelerate national expansion while retaining its flexible, franchise-friendly model, low royalties (5 per cent) and emphasis on quality coffee, all-day dining menus and family-run hospitality.
